The Cyprus League of People with Rheumatism (CYLPER) was founded in 1984 by rheumatic patients and a doctor to ensure that Cypriot patients receive proper medical treatment and support.
As an NGO, CYLPER represents all Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMD) patients in Cyprus. Its key objectives include advocating for better healthcare facilities, such as state rheumatic clinics and rehabilitation centers, conducting scientific research, and raising awareness about rheumatism.
Events like the Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon help CYLPER inform the public and stakeholders about early diagnosis and improving the quality of life for rheumatic patients.
Can you introduce your charity and provide an overview of its mission and purpose?
The Cyprus League of People with Rheumatism (CYLPER) was founded in 1984 by a small group of rheumatic patients and a doctor who recognized the need for specialized care and support for individuals suffering from Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) in Cyprus. As an NGO, our mission is to ensure that Cypriot patients with RMDs receive the medical treatment and social support they need to live with dignity, quality, and respect. We advocate for their rights, aiming to improve their overall quality of life.
What inspired the establishment of your charity, and what motivated its founders to address this particular cause?
The creation of CYLPER was born out of necessity. Rheumatic diseases are often misunderstood and under-recognized, even though they have significant physical and social impacts. The founders, being patients themselves and guided by a compassionate doctor, knew firsthand how these illnesses can affect one’s life. They were determined to create an organization that would not only provide support but also advocate for the recognition and treatment of RMDs in Cyprus. Their goal was to give patients a voice and improve the healthcare system to better meet their needs.
Are there any specific populations or communities that your charity focuses on serving? What led to the decision to prioritize these groups?
First, we aim to provide access to suitable medical treatment and support for patients. This includes pushing for the establishment of the first Multidimensional State Rheumatic Clinic and centers across state hospitals. We also work towards setting up well-equipped rehabilitation centers, conducting scientific studies, and gathering epidemiological data to improve patient care. Additionally, we focus on social programs, offering information and training to rheumatic patients, and working with authorities and organizations both locally and internationally to promote these goals.
What is the importance of events like the Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon to support your cause?
Events like the Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon are essential for raising awareness about RMDs. By participating in such events, we not only raise funds but also advocate for better healthcare policies and patient support systems. Every participant and supporter helps us further our mission to improve the quality of life for people with rheumatic diseases in Cyprus.
